{"id":793,"date":"2015-07-30T10:50:04","date_gmt":"2015-07-30T10:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/criasite.dev\/?page_id=793"},"modified":"2022-03-09T01:57:55","modified_gmt":"2022-03-09T01:57:55","slug":"alpaca-parasites","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/admin.criagenesis.cc\/alpaca-parasites\/","title":{"rendered":"Alpaca Parasites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alpacas and llamas are susceptible to many of the gastro-intestinal nematodes or \u201cworms\u201d that infect sheep and cattle, including barber\u2019s pole worm (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haemonchus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spp) and the scour worms. The behavior of worms in alpacas is not well described and is currently being studied at the University of Melbourne. The project is identifying worm species, worm behaviour, methods of diagnosis\/monitoring of worm burdens and worm control in alpacas. In the interim, camelid farmers need to extrapolate from sheep research on how best to control worms. The benefits of good worm control include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fewer deaths and illness from worms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fewer drenches, particularly long-acting drenches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved productivity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prolonged life of drenches<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Camelids are highly susceptible to the liver fluke, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fasciola hepatica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is the only liver fluke found in Australia and can lead to reduced productivity and death. It is essential to routinely check for fluke eggs in the faeces of your herd if you are in a liver fluke district. Fluke populations wax and wane according to time of year and rainfall in your district \u2013 look for fluke eggs at every opportunity so you do not get caught out!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary ectoparasite to infest Australian alpacas and llamas is the camelid chewing louse, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bovicola breviceps<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These lice are spread at shows, mobile-matings and on shearing gear. Treatment is possible if you run a closed herd, but prevention of it entering the herd is ideal.
